ITS TRUE!!

saturn awards 3 250609

Star Trek Into Darkness helmer J.J. Abrams will direct Star Wars: Episode VII for Walt Disney Pictures and Lucasfilm, reports TheWrap. The site says that Ben Affleck was also in contention.

Back in November, Abrams commented on the possibility of him directing and it sounded like it wasn’t happening:

“Look, Star Wars is one of my favorite movies of all time. I frankly feel that – I almost feel that, in a weird way, the opportunity for whomever it is to direct that movie, it comes with the burden of being that kind of iconic movie and series. I was never a big Star Trek fan growing up, so for me, working on Star Trek didn’t have any of that, you know, almost fatal sacrilege, and so, I am looking forward more then anyone to the next iterations of Star Wars, but I believe I will be going as a paying moviegoer!”

TheWrap adds that Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy has been courting Abrams for the director’s chair for a while.

Sta r Wars: Episode VII is scheduled to hit theaters in 2015. Michael Arndt is writing the script.

Bunji, Fay Ann Drop From Soca Monarch Two Days From Semi’s

Bunji, Fay Ann Pull Out

Soca Monarch shocker

Bunji Garlin and Fay Ann Lyons-Alvarez have both bowed out of the International Groovy and Power Soca Monarch competitions, respectively.

UPDATE:

POSTED VIA THEIR FACEBOOK FANPAGE

As it with any contract that we are positioned to get into be it endorsement, real estate or the likes we sat with management and legal team for proper advice about the Soca Monarch contract simply because it is our right and responsibility as human beings and artistes to do so. To enter into Soca monarch one has to agree and therefore sign the contract and we are not in agreement with some of the contracts clauses and we are in no way asking nor demanding that they make changes to suit us because it would not be fair to the other artistes therefore we choose to respectfully withdraw from the competition. This is not expected to be a noisy situation or a back and forth public battle, the Foundation reserves it’s right to do what it thinks is needed to protect it’s entity just as we reserve the right to agree , disagree and protect ourselves where and when is required.

The couple announced this last night, saying they decided to withdraw because they believe that fundamental clauses in the competitors’ contracts were objectionable and demanded too much of the winners.

bunji-fayann-NL

They were therefore advised by their management and legal representatives that it was best they pull out of the competition before the semi-final round on Sunday at the Arima Velodrome. Bunji had pulled position number 15 and Lyons-Alvarez number 20.

Among the elements in the contract with which Bunji and Lyons-Alvarez took exception to was the rule that winners must give back to the Caribbean Prestige Foundation (CPF) five per cent of the winnings.

Also, the winners must defend the respective titles the following year, or they will have to pay back 90 per cent of the prize money.

Another clause the artistes are objecting to in the contract is that the winners must attend the prize distribution ceremony wherever it may be, here at home or abroad.

Chairman of CPF William Munro, said last night he was saddened and very hurt over Lyons-Alvarez and Bunji pulling out only two days before the semi-finals, and he was hoping they would reconsider.

“There was never any discussion. They could have even sent a letter, and I would have sat down with them to see how we could work things out. Last year, I had two meetings with many of the artistes at my home, and we presented the rules and they were agreed on.”

“Fay Ann topped the Power in the preliminaries and Bunji topped in the Groovy. I am wondering how the public is going to take this news because everybody was so happy when they returned.

“I hope they will reconsider or at least meet with me. I have no malice and still love them. I will bend over backwards for them, but I can’t change the rules to please only two people,” Munro said.

Lyons-Alvarez and Bunji did not compete in the Soca Monarch competition last year and at that time announced they were considering not returning because they wanted to focus on taking their music directly to an international audience.

When Bunji ended up with a major hit with the release of the song “Differentology” in November last year, people began to call for his return to the competition. This was the same with Lyons-Alvarez when she released, among other songs, “D Stage Open”.

After several weeks of saying they will consider returning to the Soca Monarch if that was what the people wanted, the couple’s management registered them to compete, with Bunji in the Groovy and Lyons-Alvarez in the Power Soca Monarch.

Adding to the excitement of their return was the fact that Lyons’ father, five-time Soca Monarch champion SuperBlue, had also made a comeback after an over-decade-long hiatus.

All soca music fans and the public at large were anticipating a grand showdown at the Hasely Crawford National Stadium on Carnival Friday between Lyons-Alvarez, SuperBlue, Iwer George and defending Power Soca champion Machel Montano, as well as the clash between Bunji and Montano in the Groovy category.

Gangster Squad Review

1987 had The Untouchables, and 2013 has Gangster Squad.

113mins,

Director: Ruben Fleischer

Writers:

Will BeallPaul Lieberman (book)

I said the above statement because it’s true. There hasn’t been a great movie that’s a cop/gangster style genre, set in the glory days of the gangster period, since The Untouchables. This movie isn’t better than The Untouchables, but it’s worth making the argument. I found a lot of similarities between the two.

Unlike The Untouchables, I wasn’t learning about these criminals when I was in school, I just wanted to see the movie because the trailer was bad ass (as you can see here or by clicking above). The cast also gave me the reason to go. Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling, Sean Penn, Anthony Mackie, Robert Patrick, etc. It was really a bunch of actors who you would never suspect doing a movie together, and the only one I don’t care for is Nick Nolte. Penn, Brolin, Gosling made the movie for me, and the surprising role of Wrevock, by Troy Garity. Emma Stone was ok. I don’t think she’s an incredible actress but she has talent and potential. The best female in the movie is best said like this; I have this theory that all the best relationships are written (you Notebook lovers know what I mean). The role of Connie O’Mara by Mireille Enos was the best wife role I have ever seen in a movie…EVER. The movie was written a bit spotty up to her point in the movie and she acted the hell out of those lines. She easily was the best acted female, but because of her role she will be over looked.

Layout 1

I don’t often comment on the directors, but I literally just peeped his work on imdb, and this is basically his first “serious” movie. He did 30 Minutess or Less and Zombieland. Shocking, I know.

Last thing. There’s a point in the movie that you’re supposed to feel sad for, but it fails. The camera work afterwards however, is an extreme highlight to the movie. Every action scene is amazingly filmed (though I feel some was shot in cgi which takes away from the effects of these movies in my opinion), and the one single best part to this movie over The Untouchables, is how the movie ends. It’s such a man moment which seems to have been forgotten since the days of 90’s action movies.

Rating:

  • Overall rating of the movie: 4.6 out of 5,
  • Cinematography: 4.8 out of 5,

Hitchcock Movie Review

He never won an Oscar, but he’s regarded as one of the best directors in the medium to have ever worked in it.

Cast overview, first billed only:
Anthony Hopkins
Helen Mirren
Scarlett Johansson
Danny Huston
Whitfield Cook
Toni Collette
Michael Stuhlbarg
Michael Wincott
Jessica Biel

98 Mins, Director: Sacha Gervasi Writers

John J. McLaughlin (screenplay), Stephen Rebello(book)

It’s hard to say what this movie is. It’s not a love story, but it is. It’s not a biopic, but it is. It’s not even a an Oscar winning movie, but it’s worth a nomination or two. The movie itself is more of a moment in time than it is an actual biopic. It deals with the filming of one of his more famous motion pictures, Psycho. My two biggest problems with this film are, there’s a couple seen in the movie where they really just don’t fit anywhere, nor really help to add to the movie. The other is the consistency of the weight of Hitchcock. It seems to flutter as often as the frames per second does in a film reel.

hitchcock-poster4Anthony Hopkins does a tremendous job playing Alfred Hitchcock. I think this with a slight bias and ignorance. My only a experience with him really, is the few tv specials that came on global back in the 90’s (Global is a tv station here in Canada) and I was like 6,  so what did I really know? Anthony, was last seen as the All Father Odin, in THOR, and did a fantastic job there as well, given his role. Helen Mirren (who I have a tiny crush on, since seeing her in the movie R.E.D.) and Anthony Hopkins, make this a love story, which really helps move the story along nicely. But as I said, I don’t think this was intended to be a love story. The other actors (Scarlett, Jessica Biel and…) seemed to really just have extended cameo roles. I believe that was done on purpose, either by script or editing, because the movie really is about Hitchcock and Alma.

The coolest thing you get to see, is how a production was made back in the 50’s with it all being a set, and the editing process. In addition to that, you see why he’s a good/brilliant director. To be a good director, you need to be able to make your actors feel certain emotions, and given the stress he was under, he really got his actors to feel what he wanted.
I’m not entirely sure how accurate this movie is, but it’s nice for film students and fans of the overall medium to watch the movie and learn a thing or two about the industry, much less the famed director.

Rating:

Uncanny Avengers #1 Review

So if you remember this year’s event AVX, and even the epilogue of the AVX: consequences (maybe if you’re lucky you can still get the issues, I posted them in my review of book 12 at the bottom), then you may have seen this coming. From Marvel anyway.
Uncanny Avengers-Zone-000
“…. We failed him. Chuck’s died without ever seeing his dream come true”- Logan aka Wolverine.

Now, take that in. It’s true isn’t it? In all the years I’ve known about the X-Men, only in alternate universes have the X-Men even come remotely close to achieving the professor’s dream. So with that in mind, the creative team of Rick Remender, and John Cassidy (on art minus colour) bring us Uncanny Avengers, which consists of Wolverine, Captain America, Havok (see X-Men: First Class), Wanda Maximoff aka Scarlett Witch, Rogue, and Thor.

The book deals with the core X-Men principle: “Why are we hated? Because we’re different”, which I think everyone at some point in time in their lives will experience some form of hatred. Be it from an obvious/fair reason (I. E, YEARS of bullying), or even to things out of ones control, such a being of a certain creed and race (in case you didn’t know, the X-Men is a super powered version of the civil rights moment of the 60’s), but I’m drifting…

I love this book. If I didn’t say it in my Spider-man review, then I meant to say that I’ve never had a “favourite all time individual comic”. I have favourite arcs/runs etc, but nothing for an individual issue. This may have topped any single issue I’ve ever read, which is largely due to the creative team. The Red Skull (last famously seen in the Captain America movie, and last years event, Fear Itself) just by appearance is scary, and the way in which John Cassidy drew him. Then there’s the extent of his villainy.. *SPOILER * HE TAKES OUT THE BRAIN OF PROFESSOR XAVIER. Let that sit for a second, a pro Nazi general has taken the brain of the worlds STRONGEST TELEPATH.

Uncanny Avengers-Zone-022So go get your copy, and know it’s worth every penny.

Rating:

  • Overall rating of the comic: 5 out of 5,
  • Art: 4 out of 5,
  • layout: 4 out of 5,
  • True to character dialogue: 4 out of 5,
  • Story: 5 out of 5.

Thank you for reading feedback is always helpful. Enjoy your Week!

THAT’S IT! Cheers: “To Peace” and May the Force be with you!

2012 in review

This is pretty cool and I think , a perfect way to announce that in sometime later this month TSM WILL BE NO LONGER. I’m working on a new name but for now, it’s staying as such until I can think of something (which shouldn’t be hard I come up with names all the time). In the near future this same site will feature TONS of more things. I’ve been slacking on posts due to the movie I’ve been working on so bare with me, but as I’m tirelessly  at work, feel free to see what you have helped me achieve in the past year.

Here’s an excerpt:

4,329 films were submitted to the 2012 Cannes Film Festival. This blog had 17,000 views in 2012. If each view were a film, this blog would power 4 Film Festivals
