A second-rate cage fighter on the mixed martial arts circuit, Luke Wright, lives a numbing life of routine beatings and chump change, until the day he blows a rigged fight. Realizing he’s the only person Mei can trust, Luke tears a swath through the city’s brutal underworld to save an innocent girls life, and perhaps even redeem his own.

I think it’s safe to say (see what I did there?) That this movie, though it looked like crap, satisfied on many levels. The movie can be seen as a lot of things, but to be frank, it is simply an action movie like any other. This one just has Jason Statham, and a moral that is kind of relevant today. I had posted a trailer for it not too long ago on here, and I’ll be honest, besides Statham, there wasn’t ANYTHING having me wanting to watch this movie.

*[SPOILER ALERT]*

The story (editing aside) was, for the most part well executed. At times I felt bombarded by information, but at the same time it added to the depth and added a “thriller” side of the story. I didn’t expect it to be like that, I thought it was gonna be very simple in terms of the goal, and just full of action. The beginning felt rushed, but in the overall scope of things, when the movie is over it makes sense why it was rushed, for they had quite a bit to explain. Gets the benign stuff out the way cause really they could have explained that at any time in the movie. I was at a drive in so I missed a few things thanks, in part, to the quick cross-cutting editing and the switching between english and subtitles. That got a tad bit annoying but meh, it wasn’t longer than 30 mins into the movie. The only flaw I had with the movie was at the end. (like I was actually MAD lol) All I’ll say is *[SPOILER]* the girl saves Luke from what would have been a wicked fight (I was hoping Luke was gonna fight this dude). He seemed like he would have gave him a run for his money.

The acting from Statham is probably his best performance to date. He just had this real emotion, especially when his character arrives home to some really bad news, he still acts like a bad ass. He just had a better connection to this role, as opposed to him only playing a bad ass. I don’t know if that is because of something, or just method acting, but either way it worked (hell, it could have been just good direction). He even has some wicked lines, and his delivery alone easily makes him the best actor in the film. The other actors didn’t really sell some of their lines as compared to the stunts they had to do. They weren’t unbearable or anything, just didn’t have the same kind of skill, though that may have been intentional.

The cinematography was done so well in terms of the selection of angles. The director of photography was so on point here–The angles and the use of mirrors was really refreshing. There wasn’t much that I noticed for meaningful shots, though that may have been in part to eating while watching the movie. Yes, there was shaky cam, but itt wasn’t as bad as others have been, just some of the fight scenes suffer because of the style. *sigh…* I wish this trend would stop.

The editing was ok, there wasn’t much to complain with there, it was just ok.

Now, I’m not trying to get all into this topic here, but for any one following the Trayvon Martin case, I thought this movie was a nice “flipped” scenario in a way. Instead of following and harming the child, a hero came from the brink of committing suicide to help protect this child. Though fictional and most likely not intentional, it did have that connection, and if not then I made it for you. this movies moral is quite simply, when you’re in the need of a new beginning, simply look out and open your eyes, ANYTHING COULD HAPPEN!

In Pittsburgh,overwhelming evidence convicts Lara Brennan of killing her despised boss. For three years while she’s in county jail, her husband John cares for their young son and pursues appeals. When she loses, John decides to break her out. He consults a successful escape artist turned author, and he starts planning. He’ll need to disrupt jail routine, get IDs and passports, know how to evade a dragnet, find a destination, and squirrel away cash. Then, he gets word that Lara will be transferred to prison within the next three days– he’s out of time.

This was a movie I had wanted to see in theaters, but for one reason or another, I just didn’t get to it. so here’s my review.

The story is paced well I felt, with some moments here and there in the editing that gets this movie losing some points, but I shall get to that later. The movie starts off with a moment that is later played out in the film, and then back tracks (I’m not often a fan of those scenes but meh, it didn’t bother me too much). When we finally return to the main cast of the film, it’s at some bar and it’s a weird set of dialogue from the four characters about men and women and the work place. Then we cut to the next day, and kind of the ‘starting point’ to all the drama. Then it flicks to 3 years later, and then around the 20 min mark is when the ‘shit just got real’ moment happens. Russel Crowe’s character asks the question. ‘What if we choose to exist in a reality of our own making, does that render us insane?’ It’s at this moment I like to put myself into the story like ‘What would i do if that were me?’ That’s when you start to feel all the emotions really start to flow from Crowe (I’ll get to the acting next, bare with me). Once we get to the part where we learn he only has 3 days left, the story gets to be a lil more than one would believe, but still Hollywood enough for the audience to believe it is plausible. the story has an odd ending, but I’m going to leave that alone so you can watch it yourself.

RUSSEL CROWE CAN ACT! Since I saw him in Gladiator he has been in all these movies, and almost all have him acting at his best. He is so good at using words, facial expressions and body language to convey what he’s thinking, doing, and saying. Yes, the camera helps to emphasize these things, but it has to come from the actor first. The acting he gives us is nothing short of great like most of his other roles. I think it’s so hard to show believable affection to a kid that isn’t yours, but I would’ve sworn this kid was his they way he and the child acted with each other. Elizabeth Banks May be a good actor, but some of her moments weren’t all that. They just didn’t have the same emotion or any really emotion for that matter. She does have one moment that makes the audience really wonder what the hell? It’s when she “confesses” to killing her boss.. or was it just her insanity? The best actor besides Crowe, was Liam Neeson. Though only a cameo, it just had this essence of realism. The best acted moment is when John Brennan’s father discovers this will be the last time he says goodbye. John doesn’t know how or what his father knows, but he has the idea his dad knows this is “goodbye” and not “see you later, son”

The biggest problem I had in terms of editing and was, the time jumps. They weren’t bad, they just didn’t seem to fit well. It does give you a sympathy for John, but I feel that it could have been in terms of time jumps. There was a few random city shots that I felt weren’t needed in anyway. There wasn’t any shaky camera work that I noticed. There wasn’t any real noticeable meaningful camera shot. Yes, there were a few but nothing that was note worthy.

I don’t know how everyone else sees love, nor am I going to use this paragraph to explain my point of view on it totally. (Maybe I will in a rant or something) Love is shown in many various forms for each and every single one of us, but one thing we can all agree on, is that we know how much a person loves us by the lengths they go to, to prove it to us. Be it by simple loyalty, or by material things and everything in-between. But as I said, in these kind of movies, (drama movies really) I tend to put myself in the lead role to see if I’m actually willing to go those lengths depicted in the film for whatever the lead is chasing. It helps me connect to the film better. Its cool, I think, to see movies in that manner because then we, as the  audience, can realize our flaws as a person and where we could possibly improve. That didn’t happen so much for me because I know I’m pretty crazy when it comes something like this that I might actually do this. (Of course Might be screwed with that 72 hour curve ball.) Thats basically what this movie’s moral is. Just how far are we willing to go for our loved ones?  So if you watch this movie listen carefully to what Liam Neeson’s character says.

• Rent or Own? This one is tough but I think for the acting alone its worth an own.

Raid Redemption Review

Deep in the heart of Jakarta’s slums lies an impenetrable derelict apartment building which became a safe house for the world’s most dangerous killers and gangsters. The rundown apartment block has been considered untouchable to even the bravest of police. Cloaked under the cover of pre-dawn darkness and silence, an elite team is tasked with raiding the building in order to take down the notorious drug lord who runs it. But when a chance encounter with a spotter blows their cover and news of their assault reaches the drug lord, the building’s lights are cut off and all exits are blocked. Stranded on the 6th floor with no way out, the unit must fight their way through the city’s worst criminals to survive their mission.

This movie is remarkable. Never have I gone to a movie during the week, a movie that has been out for roughly two weeks, and have people still be cheering and gasping in awe. The audience was doing that and it wasn’t it even a super hero movie on opening night. Anyway, here’s my review.

*[SPOILER ALERT]*
The story is pretty simple and typical, but I didn’t care for it (yes, I know, movies need a good story or it just becomes dreadful to watch. But that’s only 90% true). The opening of this film is nicely done, it depicts what “Rama” is fighting for and how he plans to win, all without drowning the audience with all the rushed emotional moments that action movies tend to do at the start of a movie. It gave him depth at just the right pace. The writing, editing and direction is very well done for this scene. As I said the movies story is pretty typical, it’s nothing you can’t expect as it happens, but it isn’t so much a flaw to the movie (in my opinion anyway).

The Biggest flaw story wise, was that you couldn’t really tell who was who because for one, they all had a swat uniform on, and two, when the swat assignment leader started to list who to look out for, it was like he was saying it all for the very first time. Also, the director of the movie didn’t show us who he was referring to, so we had to guess who was who once inside the building and there weren’t many names used once the movie started (Not to be rude or anything). The other big flaw in this movie was the plot holes, but if you don’t think about it and just let it go then it doesn’t take away from the overall scope of the film. The ‘Moral of the story’ here was Family, Love, Understanding of ones circumstances and choices. The moral wasn’t as up front as Wrath of the Titans was, but it was detectable throughout. The other issue I had with the story was the ending.

The Acting, well.. since I didn’t understand anything that was spoken in what I will assume is the native tongue of the actors, I can’t really say it was good acting because all I had to judge was just the faces, which isn’t really enough to base anything off of. But for the most part, it was decent. The Stunt work/fight choreography, however is the highlight in terms of acting.

The stunt men & actual actors in this movie, like any other action movie (my Favourite genre by the way), is where the real acting comes from to sell the sequence. During each fight scene most to all actors involved were wicked in selling it. The flow of punches, kicks, knees & elbows, at times seemed staged, but other times, the consistency, and flow was just mad impressive. Rama has this raw, loose to his style. I don’t know if that’s from Muay Thai or just the actors style. A lot of the fight scenes have or ended in RUTHLESS kills that if you blink when the fighting starts you might miss it or something else. With that said, each level/floor they advance, and every new fight scene just ups the intensity of the fight with new challenges, settings, and fighters.

The cinematography had two ‘meaningful camera angles’ that are note worthy. The first came from inside the swat truck. The shot is a dolly to the man giving the briefing. The next one that was memorable was the first kill of the movie. Other than that it was slightly annoying when it came to the fight scenes. It was a mix of full body shots and the dreadful ‘shaky camera’. Yes, it brings intensity to a scene at times, but after a while it becomes tiresome. There was one point in the film, where the saying ‘shit just got REAL’ is visually said (the swat team is in some kind of stairwell), that it helps the scene. But the they enter some apartment, and its still going. It ‘works’ yes, but personally, they felt safe, they left the stairwell & blocked the doorway, so the shaking could have been reduced or stopped all together. Some fight scenes suffered from this effect which is sad. (Go watch the movie Ip Man, that’s how you shoot a fight scene).

Overall, this movie was well done. I don’t know the budget, but it worked, It has flaws, but so does The Dark Knight, and that’s probably the best movie made in the last couple of years. There isn’t much to complain about with this film, the flaws aren’t THAT noticeable but because I’m to review these movies, I notice these things. It’s a nice treat before the movie of the year “The Avengers” (yes. I believe that it will be).

The Fantazia International Band Launch is almost here..are you ready? Like last year, TSM will be on the road with Fantazia International chippin and gehin on BAD!! If you haven’t figured out who you are playing mas with this year then I would recommend you come play with us(no pun intended lol). Last year we had an INSANE amount of fun, and this year I can only promise you “Plenty Vibes & Plenty Action”.

Our theme this year is “Wonders of the Enchanted Forrest”. Which means all Fairy’s, Ents(talking tree’s), Talking Dragon Flies an all dem “enchanted” ting will be on de road. I can’t stress enough how much fun we had last year. If you were with us on the road then you know what I’m talking about.

First off I’d like to just say, JOSS WHEDON is frggin amazing. He co-wrote the script with the director of this amazing picture, Drew Goddard & the two craft an amazing story if not a good horror story, with a twist, and A LOT of wit. If you know what “Torture Porn” is, then you can understand the frustration the two previously mentioned, share with what the horror genre has turned into these days. As I said in my Shining Review, I’m not a big fan of horror/scary movies. Not because I’m a chicken or anything, I just don’t care to watch poorly acted movies on purpose (let’s face it, no one goes to see good acting, but good human mutilation in a typical horror movie). And maybe because when I got into film school, a teacher of mine said “Horror movies can only be two things; It can be really good and execute with scaring even the most  stone walled person, or it can be terribly funny from the story, or how bad it actually is.” (Think Jason Goes to Manhattan) Now lets get to this review.

“Five friends go for a break at a remote cabin in the woods, where they get more than they bargained for. Together, they must discover the truth behind the cabin in the woods.”

YES, I JUST GAVE YOU THE PLOT SUMMARY, SUE ME. I did that so that you can enjoy the twist if you watch it. If not keep on reading. I will eventually “ruin” it for you

So the movie itself blew me away. That may be in part to my rules about movies as I said in my “Chronicle” review, I don’t watch many promo’s for movies as to not ruin anything about the movie, Though, I did see one trailer for this movie, it didn’t look that good.

 As I said, Joss whedon is such a GOOD writer, it was one reason I was even remotely interested in this movie, and I wanted to see more of his style since he’s directing the biggest movie of the year, The Avengers (He wrote and directed that one too, I may have a “rant” of all this years summer movies if I feel for it before May 4th)

*[BIGGER SPOILER ALERT]*

I’m side tracking, The movie is, in a sense, like the Scary movie series that the Wayan’s brothers started and then got tiresome by time the 3rd instalment rolled out. I felt it was a visual “FUCK YOU” to what horror movie are these days (if not always have been) in a way, the film is saying: “This is what makes a movie scary good and stupid at the same time. THESE PLOT POINTS.” There was a lot of homage to previous horror movie horror movie antagonist which was cool to me as a fan of movies. (Oddly enough, I knew quite a few of them.) Its hard to say/classify what the movie was trying to be exactly. But the trailer plays it off more like a typical horror movie so that is good marketing to get avid horror fans into the theatres to see this film.

 The acting though was, as expected, BAD (But that may have been intentional. Most notably from Kristen Connolly. She just didn’t deliver her lines with any real talent or emotion. I don’t think that was the fault of the director. Sometimes you just have to go with what the budget can provide. The story’s “meaning and delivery” was much bigger in the scope of importance anyway. The best performance came from “Marty” (Fran Kranz) maybe because he was the only one aware of the “Puppeteers” lol.

There was maybe Four continuity errors that I might have noticed and can remember. Not much in terms of “meaningful” camera angles. It was pretty straight forward movie.

Just Remember:

1. If an old man warns you not to go there… make fun of him.
2. If you hear a strange sound outside… have sex.
3. Quaint abandoned property… sold.
4. You think you know the story.
5. If something is chasing you… split up.
6. If a door opens at random… IT HAS to be the wind.

I happened to stumble upon these two trailers for the up coming movie,”Ted” (simple title, I know). The first one is more for adult viewing (It’s a “Red Band Restricted trailer) the second is a green band, which is more suitable for everyone. (Though I don’t think this movie is for everyone, who isn’t of age I mean.)

April Gets a Captain

Recently I blogged about the director change for Captain America’s sequel and now we have a date. Unlike most of Marvel’s previous movies, the sequel to “Captain America: The First Avenger“ is scheduled to be released on April 14th, 2014.

The sequel will continue where the highly anticipated “Marvel’s The Avengers” leaves off, as Steve Rogers continues his affiliation with Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D and struggles to embrace his role in the modern world. As of right now, the only cast and crew known to return is Chris Evans and screenwriter Stephen McFeely who’s notable screen writes are the Narnia movies and the upcoming Michael Bay picture, “Pain and Gain”.
