As I said this was going to happen. First I’d like to say this: If you are a religious wo/man and have ever faced a time where your faith was really being tested to the point of giving up whatever faith, in whatever God you believe in seemed like a great idea, you may have a stronger connection to this movie. As a friend of mine said, “Its hard to believe in God, when he takes away everything you found him in”
Now that statement is basically the driving force to this movie in comparison to the 1981 version where it was basically a game between gods and Perseus’ love for Andromeda (that, now that I think about it, was random as ever.)
Princess Andromeda is the daughter of King Cepheus, who has gained a victory against the gods. The vengeful god of the underworld, Hades, demands that Andromeda is offered as a sacrifice or he will unleash the Kraken against Argos. A desperate King Cepheus asks demi-god Perseus to find a way to defeat the Kraken. Perseus accepts the challenge because Hades was responsible for his family’s death. He discovers that the way to kill the Kraken lies with getting the head of the gorgon Medusa.
The plot is basically the same as the 1981 version with a few changes here and there. No bubo this time. In my personal opinion I like most of the updates to this version. The plot is simple, though, its also a flaw when you watch it in comparison, all I kept asking was why is Poseidon just chilling as his brothers are join at each other. plus why aren’t any of the other gods saying anything but just standing there looking pretty? I’m glad they got rid of the “laid out gifts” for Perseus and had him wanting to get revenge for his fallen family and so doing it as a man. The two worst changes may be the introduction of “Io”, SHE DID NOTHING FOR THE MOVIE BUT DIE AND COME BACK BY THE GRACE OF ZEUS?! The other is the use of Calibos. They changed who he was from the original and he just became a none factor really.

As I said, this movie is more a man who has prayed, lived a decent life, and showed the gods great devotion, only to have the only family he has ever known, killed for sport. That alone is reason to argue this movie is better from the original. Plus I would argue that this movie, even though set in ancient Greek times, is reflective of the times we live in today. Because of the slimmed plot/script/screenplay the adventure to a mystical time is lost. the 80’s were a greatly DIFFERENT time from what we have now.
I really enjoyed the action sequences and the use of CGI. The Kraken is much more intimidating than the miniature one for the 81.
The acting for the most part is okay at best. Felt Hades (Fiennes) seemed too much like Voldemort In my opinion.
